Also Aircraft Knowledge, Flight performance and planning
PPL 4 maintains the success of the first three volumes and the reputation that the series has established for clarity, presentation and content. The first section deals with basic aerodynamics, possibly one of the least-well understood of all the PPL syllabus subjects.
The physical characteristics of the aeroplane are also covered in detail and, for the first time in a PPL textbook, modern construction materials and designs are explained - a particular safety feature given the increasing number of home built and kitplane designs being flown. The book also explains aircraft loading and performance to JAA requirements as well as aircraft documentation and maintenance procedures and general flight safety. With abundant illustrations (line-drawings, pictures and photographs) and absolutely up-to-date information, this book is has become the new standard reference for this subject.

Overview of the full course
The PPL Course Series In its original edition, first published in 1994, the PPL course series quickly became standard issue at the majority of flying schools and clubs training for CAA courses.
Their accuracy, clarity and user-friendly approach was widely acclaimed and their fresh and modern approach to their subject matter made them a favourite amongst student pilots and instructors alike.
Now being published in their second edition, specifically re-written to reflect the JAR syllabus, the PPL Course Series continues to be the most up-to-date series available and is now the only set of publications that completely and accurately cover the JAA PPL course syllabus. Furthermore, AFE follow a publishing policy of restricting the print run of each book to the minimum commercially viable, meaning that amendments and updates can be incorporated into reprints as quickly as possible, rather than waiting up to a couple of years to publish new information.
Moreover, this is the only series written by a JAR Flight Instructor (FI), which is why more and more FTOs are changing over to the PPL Courses series.

Comment: PILOT Magazine
"The first volume of AFE's series of books covering the PPL course was published in 1994 and set a new standard in clarity of presentation in the way it covered flying training. We have now reached the fourth volume of this excellent series, and once again Jeremy Pratt and his team of technical advisors (all of whom are flying instructors) have managed to maintain the high standards they set in earlier volumes As in Volumes 1, 2 and 3, interesting fresh approaches have been made to several of the topics dealt with. These generally work well, dispelling some of the old misconceptions that still linger around certain aviation teaching and textbooks. As an engineer, I particularly admire the way this volume treats the aero-engine and propeller subjects Overall this book is a worthy addition to the series, and one that I thoroughly recommend to any student pilot and indeed to any private pilot wishing to refresh and extend technical know-how about the machines we fly and what makes them tick."
