de Havilland DH.106 Comet
The de Havilland DH.106 Comet was the world's first pure-jet airliner. Powered by four de Havilland Ghost turbojet engines and accommodating its passengers in a pressurized cabin, the Comet offered new levels of speed, comfort and smoothness to the air traveller when it entered service with BOAC in 1952.

Soon the Comet's success was marred by several fatal crashes. The revised Comet Mk 4, powered by Rolls-Royce Avon engines, went on to have a successful career with many world airlines into the 1980s. But Britain's head start in jet airline travel had been lost and the Comet never enjoyed the commercial success of its US rivals.
